How to clean a microwave?

The steam method is by far the easiest way to clean a microwave without scrubbing. The trapped steam softens dried food splatter that would otherwise take significant elbow grease to remove. You only need water and an acidic agent — either a sliced lemon or a splash of white vinegar — in a microwave-safe bowl.

Microwave the bowl on high for 5 minutes. Do not open the door immediately; let the steam continue working for another 2 minutes while the bowl stays inside. When you open the door, use a clean microfiber cloth or paper towel to wipe down the interior walls, ceiling, and floor — everything should wipe off in one pass.

Remove the turntable plate and wash it separately in warm soapy water or the dishwasher. The roller ring beneath the turntable accumulates grease and food debris; wipe it down with a damp cloth while the plate is out. For the exterior, a slightly damp cloth followed by a dry one prevents water from getting into the control panel vents.

For stubborn spots that the steam didn't fully loosen, apply a paste of baking soda and water, let it sit for two minutes, then wipe. Avoid abrasive scrubbers on the interior — they scratch the enamel coating and create spots where food sticks more easily over time. A monthly steam clean prevents buildup from becoming a major project.
